Focus on EU smelters: production since 2002

The production of primary aluminium in the EU between 2002 and today decreased significantly, with 38% less smelters in operation today. Prior to the 2009 crisis, the EU was producing more than 3Mt of primary aluminium. Today, Europe produces just 2Mt, while its ingot imports dependency is on the rise. Unfortunately, of the 16 smelters still working, many are still at risk or curtailed.
