Recycling: EU net exports of aluminium scrap

Since 2002, EU has been a continuous net exporter of aluminium scrap year-on-year, with a peak in 2009 during the global crisis. Aluminium scrap is not only a raw material but also an energy bank, which means high export levels of scrap compromises the development of the recycling industry and the circular economy in Europe. Scrap kept in the EU on the other hand can be recycled, saving about 95% of the energy required to produce primary aluminium.
