Innovation workshop connects aluminium industry with research experts

Around 60 industry and research experts attended European Aluminium’s Innovation Hub workshop, jointly organised with Professor Friedrich (IME- RWTH) and AMAP. It took place on 21 June at AMAP’s offices in Aachen, Germany.

The workshop aimed at encouraging collaboration with aluminium industry and to initiate project ideas, potentially under the Horizon 2020 framework programme. Experts from research and technology organisations and universities presented new ideas and concepts to industrial experts from company members.

Topics included melt purification, dross and bottom ash recycling, process optimisation and modelling, sensors and digitalisation and joining issues. Three parallel sessions addressed challenges specific to primary production, recycling and manufacturing.

Gerd Götz, Director General of European Aluminium, said:

“The European aluminium industry is unique in its potential to contribute to building a low carbon economy: it is agile, full of ideas and future-driven. This workshop proves that we are not fighting the battles of yesterday. The Innovation Hub and the discussions here today are vital for launching promising projects and securing an outstanding future for the aluminium industry.”

Launched by European Aluminium in 2015, the Innovation Hub is a community made up of companies from across Europe’s aluminium value chain.
